After 45 years of serving the community from its longtime home, the Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities (TACID) is preparing for its next chapter. With its lease concluding in April 2029, TACID will begin planning for a move into a larger, more accessible space to meet growing community needs.
Since 1979, TACID has thrived thanks to a remarkable agreement with the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Community College (TCC) that provided rent-free space. This extraordinary gift allowed TACID to devote nearly every dollar to hosting disability support groups and life-changing programs for people with disabilities and behavioral health needs across Pierce County.
Over the years, the building has welcomed tens of thousands of adults with disabilities—and it continues to flourish today. TACID hums with Bingo, art, recovery and wellness groups, resource navigation, and other peer-led programs that foster belonging. It also provides no-cost meeting space for community groups. Yet as participation grows, demand for programs—and the building itself—now exceeds capacity.
“This is a bittersweet moment,” said Nalani Linder, Executive Director of TACID. “We are deeply grateful to Tacoma Community College and the City of Tacoma for extending an original 25-year lease into nearly 45 years of rent-free space. Their generosity allowed us to grow, thrive, and serve thousands. While we will miss this home, our participants have been asking for more space, more bathrooms, and more room to grow. This transition gives us the chance to imagine what the next 45 years could look like.”
Tamyra Howser, Vice President of College Relations at TCC, reflected: “We honor TACID’s long history with TCC and the community, and we thank the City of Tacoma for their generous support. We are excited about TACID’s new course of action and future plans as they seek a bigger space to accommodate their growing needs. The next four years will be an amazing, historic time for TACID.”
To guide this next step, TACID will launch a community visioning process so individuals with disabilities, families, and allies have a voice in shaping the future. At the same time, TACID is preparing for a capital campaign to secure a larger, more accessible home—one designed to carry forward its mission of belonging, hope, and empowerment for decades to come.
A press conference announcing this process will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. PT at TACID (6315 S. 19th St., Tacoma). Community members, partners, and local leaders are invited.
